Cultivating Happiness, One Memory at a Time

Hardwiring Happiness: The New Brain Science of Contentment, Calm, and Confidence book cover

At Greystone Programs, we know that caring for others begins with caring for ourselves. Recently, our Staff Development Coordinator, Von Norris, shared a valuable tool for personal well-being drawn from the book Hardwiring Happiness by Dr. Rick Hanson. Though this isn’t Von’s original work, he encouraged all of us to try this simple yet life-changing practice called HEAL, a method designed to help our brains hold on to the good, not just the bad.

Here’s how it works:

Step One: HAVE a positive or beneficial experience, either in the moment or by recalling something good that happened recently.

Step Two: ENRICH the experience by noticing details—where you were, who was with you, and what was happening. Tap into your senses: what did you see, hear, feel, smell, or even taste?
