4th of July Safety Tips For Choking Prevention and Grilling

Hot Dog/ Sausage Choking Prevention:


Hot dogs and Sausage are a popular food on the 4th of July but pose a choking hazard, especially for young children.


How to serve Hot Dogs/ Sausage safely:


1. Proper Slicing:

· NYS OPWDD Choking Prevention Guidlines Recomend that when purchasing hot dogs and other sausages, they should be skinless and must be cut lengthwise and then modified to the food consistency listed in the diet order. Adequite supervision of individuals must occur when hotdogs/ sausages are sereved.

· The USDA also recoments that hot dogs should be cut lengthwise into strips first and then cut again into smaller pieces.

2. Supervise Eating:

· Close Supervision: Always watch individuals while they eat. Ensure they sit down and eat slowly.

· Chewing and Swallowing: Teach individuals to chew food thoroughly before swallowing.

3. Avoid Distractions:

· Focused Eating: Discourage activities like running or playing while eating, as they can increase the risk of choking.

4. Know the Heimlich Maneuver:

· For All Ages: Familiarize yourself with the Heimlich maneuver for both children and adults. It’s a crucial skill for choking emergencies.


Grilling Safety Tips:


Grilling is a staple of 4th of July celebrations but requires caution to prevent injuries and accidents.


1. Grill Placement:

· Away from Structures: Keep the grill at least 10 feet away from buildings, deck railings, and overhanging branches.

· Stable Surface: Ensure the grill is on a stable, flat surface to prevent tipping.

2. Starter Safety:

· Use Proper Starters: Only use charcoal starter fluid or a chimney starter for charcoal grills. Never add starter fluid to an open flame.

· Electric Starters: Consider using electric starters, which are safer and eliminate the need for lighter fluid.

3. Monitor the Grill:

· Never Leave Unattended: Always stay near the grill while it’s in use.

· Keep Children and Pets Away: Create a safe zone of at least three feet around the grill.

4. Proper Tools:

· Use Long-Handled Tools: Grill tools with long handles reduce the risk of burns and splatters.

·  Heat-Resistant Gloves: Wear heat-resistant gloves when handling the grill or hot items.

5. Safe Cooking Practices:

· Avoid Overcrowding: Don’t overcrowd the grill. This helps cook food evenly and reduces flare-ups.

· Check Temperatures: Use a meat thermometer to ensure food reaches safe internal temperatures:

Beef, pork, lamb: 145°F

Ground meats: 160°F

Poultry: 165°F

6. Fire Control:

· Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand or water nearby.

· Control Grease: Regularly clean the grill to prevent grease buildup, which can cause flare-ups.


Additional Safety Considerations:

· Cool Down: Allow the grill to cool completely before covering or storing it.

· Dispose of Coals Properly: For charcoal grills, place cooled ashes in a metal container.
